A grounding sheet is an investment you sleep on for years — but only if you care for it correctly. The conductive silver threads that make it work can be dulled by the wrong detergent or settings, which quietly reduces the grounding effect. Here's how to wash and care for your grounding sheet so it keeps conducting for the long haul.
The one rule that matters most: no fabric softener
Fabric softener leaves a coating on fibres — lovely on normal sheets, bad on a grounding sheet, because that coating insulates the silver and reduces conductivity. Skip softener entirely. Dryer sheets do the same thing, so avoid those too.
Washing
Use a mild, additive-free detergent and a gentle cycle in cool or lukewarm water. Avoid bleach, and avoid harsh "whitening" or "brightening" detergents, which can be hard on silver. Wash your grounding sheet on its own or with similar soft items rather than with zippers and hooks that can snag the fabric.
Drying
Air-drying is gentlest and extends the sheet's life. If you prefer the dryer, use low or no heat — high heat is the main risk to the conductive threads over time. We cover this specifically in can grounding sheets go in the dryer?
How often to wash
Treat it like any fitted sheet — roughly every one to two weeks with regular use. Body oils and lotions build up over time and can also reduce conductivity, so don't stretch washes too far; a clean sheet grounds better than a grimy one.
Little habits that extend its life
Going to bed with clean skin and minimal heavy lotion keeps the conductive surface clearer. Keep sharp jewellery and pet claws in mind, since snags damage the woven threads. And make sure the connection points stay clean and dry. If you ever suspect it's not grounding well, re-check the setup using our setup guide before assuming the sheet is the problem.
Why this matters
Cared for properly, a quality grounding sheet keeps working for years; neglected, even a great sheet loses its effect. A few gentle habits protect both the grounding and your investment. Our sheets are built to withstand regular washing, and Canadian support is there if you have a care question. See the Tala grounding sheet →
