You've got your grounding sheet on the bed — now the practical questions start. Do you have to sleep naked for it to work? Can you keep your electric blanket through a Canadian winter? Can you put another sheet over the top? Here are the real do's and don'ts so you get the most from every night.

Do: aim for skin contact

Grounding works through your skin, so direct contact is ideal — but you don't have to sleep naked. Light pyjamas, bare feet, an exposed arm or shoulder all maintain a good connection. The goal is simply some consistent bare-skin contact with the conductive surface.

Don't: bury it under thick layers

The biggest mistake is putting thick barriers between you and the sheet. A heavy mattress protector, a thick decorative top sheet, or heavy fabric over the conductive side reduces the effect. If you want to protect the sheet, keep any cover thin and breathable — and remember the conductive side should face you.

The heated blanket question

This is the most common winter question for Canadians. You can stay warm, but be sensible about it: an electric blanket is a powered device, so for the cleanest grounding, avoid sandwiching a powered, plugged-in electric blanket directly between you and the grounding sheet. Better options are to warm the bed with the electric blanket first and switch it off before sleep, place it beneath the mattress topper rather than against the grounding layer, or choose non-electric warmth — a wool topper or duvet — over the grounding sheet. That keeps you warm while letting the sheet do its job.

Do: keep it clean and consistent

Clean skin grounds better than skin heavy with lotion, and a freshly washed sheet conducts better than a grimy one — care steps are in our wash and care guide. Most importantly, use it every night; the benefit comes from consistency, and most people notice gradual improvement over a couple of weeks.

Don't: expect instant miracles — or ignore your doctor

Grounding's benefits are real for many people but gradual and modest, mostly around sleep and calm — not an overnight cure. And if you have a pacemaker, take sensitively-dosed medication, or are pregnant, check with your doctor first (see when to be careful).

Quick recap

Do: skin contact, thin breathable layers, clean sheet, nightly use. Don't: thick barriers, a powered electric blanket directly against the sheet, or unrealistic expectations. Not sure your connection is right? Our setup guide walks through it. See the Tala grounding sheet →
